Our grandson, Greer, 4, told Cintra the other day : "Grammy, when you go to Africa, will you bring me a T-shirt that glows in the dark?"
We don't blame him for not being sure where we are or are going next. This trip to Italy came up so soon after South Asia and Florida, that it seems that we are globe trotters. It is coincidental that these outings came up the same year and the year of Cintra's retirement.
Believe me, this frequency of travel is not likely to come up again anytime soon.
We were excited to accept an invitation from Rubicon Pharmacies to join Cintra's colleagues for this special tour. They chose Italy because the Rubicon has special significance in Italian history and it is the name of the business in which we have been involved.
We had barely caught up with getting the house and our affairs on track when we had to prepare again to be away, this time for a shorter break.
We were relieved that our flight on Tuesday left mid-morning instead of the usual 6 a.m. when we are flying east. Our flight to Toronto went smoothly, even though we saw it as a test for Cintra's back that is just barely in the recovery phase from her recent injury.
Our wait in the Lester B. Pearson International Airport was relaxing and we boarded for Rome after about three hours in Toronto. It was a big help once again to have special assistance for Cintra at the airports.
Flying for the following eight hours was much more of a test. But Cintra did well. She had to stretch occasionally and towards the end found it difficult to remain seated.
We arrived at Rome Fuimincino on time and connected with our Rubicon group. There were some miscues in the planning that led to a couple of hours delay at the airport before leaving on the first leg of our tour.
From the airport, we travelled by coach for several hours to make it to our first hotel in Sorrento. Along the way we drove past the famous Napoli (the city where dean Martin sang about It's Amore) to this enchanting tourist town of Sorrento that is also featured in Italian songs and stories.
Our hotel literally overlooks the sea and gives us spectacular views in every direction. Last evening we met for a lovely Italian dinner and today we tour the famous Amalfi Coast.
As long as I have reliable Internet access, I will try to share updates though this blog. Once again, I hope it will remind us of what we have seen and done and it will allow you to share in our experience.
We are finding that southern Italy is as beautiful and romantic as it has been said to be and we are here at a perfect time of the year. If I could choose my own weather condition, this will be it. But then, who knows what will happen a few hours or minutes from now. We have surely learned that lesson on the Canadian prairies.
Please come back and visit our blog in case I have another update in a day or two.
Ciao.
